Beaune and Hôtel-Dieu (Hospices de Beaune)
Do you want to know more about Burgundy, its history and its wines? Then Beaune is the right place for you. After a city tour, discover the Hôtel-Dieu, the medieval hospital of the Hospices de Beaune.
We start on the market square, where I also familiarize you with the culinary specialties of Burgundy. After a short walk we come to the Romanesque Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame, the spiritual center of the city.
We continue to the medieval residence of the great dukes of Burgundy, today a wine museum. We visit an old watchtower and linger for a moment at the former Carmelite convent of St. Etienne.
The visit to the Hôtel-Dieu is the final highlight of the tour. Founded in 1443, it is an expression of the will of its founder, Chancellor Nicolas Rolin, to buy paradise with earthly wealth. Where once pious beguines cared for more than 60 sick people, today visitors are inspired by the colorful tile roofs, the princely furnishings in the armory, colorful woven carpets and last but not least the altar from Roger von der Weyden, a major work of the Flemish painter. And let's not forget that this hospital and its foundation still hides one of the largest and most renowned wineries in Burgundy!
