In Graz, you absolutely must see the entire Old Town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
Furthermore, as the final stop on your tour, don't miss a visit to the Schlossberg, a beautiful viewpoint right in the heart of the city. From there, you have the most beautiful view of the Old Town and can reflect on what you've seen.
Allow at least two hours for a tour of the Old Town and at least three hours for a tour including the Schlossberg.
A walking tour of the Old Town includes the following sights: Main Square, Landhaus (State Parliament Building), Glockenspiel (carillon) (concerts three times a day), Castle/Cathedral and Mausoleum (open only from April to October!), Freedom Square with the old University and Schauspielhaus (theater) (exterior view only), Court of the Teutonic Order, Kunsthaus (art museum), and Murinsel (Mur Island) (both buildings from the European Capital of Culture year 2003).
If you include the Schlossberg (Castle Hill), you'll see Graz's landmark clock tower and the bell tower (from the outside). The most beautiful panoramic view of the city can be enjoyed from the Clock Tower. It's definitely worth seeing!
Within the Old Town, you can explore on foot. The Schlossberg can be reached either on foot, by the Schlossbergbahn funicular railway, or by elevator. (Please note that there are fares to pay!)
The Landeszeughaus (State Armoury) – the largest and best-preserved medieval weapons collection in the world – is also located in the Old Town and can be visited during opening hours.
A visit to Eggenberg Palace (accessible only by public transport or car from the city center) is also highly recommended after a tour of the city.
