Roman emperors once kept their people happy with “panem et circensis” (bread and circus games), organized chariot races in the Circus Maximus, gladiator fights and animal baiting in amphitheatres. In addition, the spectators were also fed free of charge. The rulers also used the events for political purposes, to present successors or to have themselves celebrated.
