A Walking Tour Through History And Culture

In our four-hours walking tour through the old city of Nicosia will start at Famagusta Gate. From there we will do a journey through the long hundred-years-old history, culture and diverse architecture of Cyprus. We will see important monuments of the Venecian, Ottoman and British colonial period as well of the modern times since the independence of the Republic of Cyprus in the year 1960. Some of them are the Venetian Walls and the Famagusta Gate, old churches and museums, the Omerie Mosque and the Hamam (Turkish bath), the Missiricos-Church and the Faneromeni-School and -Church. We will also pass at the Archbishop’s Palace and the Pancyprian Gymnasium as mentioned in the well-known book “Bitter Lemons” by Lawrence Durrel. Wie will further walk through small pedestrian zones, admire the architecture of the old city, and see beautiful restaurants and traditional cafes. Important personalities and events of the Cypriot history will be mentioned. Of a great significance is also the “Buffer Zone” which makes Nicosia still to be the only divided capital-city of the world. Our walking tour will continue through the main shopping street Ledra-St. to Laiki Geitonia (“Traditional Neighbourhood”) and to the Freedom Square which has been only recently re-designed in very modern style by the famous Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid.
