The medieval churches of St. Petri and St. Jacobi stoically defy the commerce of the neighbouring commercial and office buildings on Mönckebergstraße. Only traces of Hammaburg Castle and the medieval harbour remain, and the cathedral is missing from the former cathedral square (now Hammaburg-Platz). The ruins of St Nikolai's Church, destroyed in 1943, are a powerful memorial against war. A special gem is the historic Deichstraße with its merchants' houses on the waterfront.
