The oldest Parisian District: Le Marais
Together we explore the oldest district in the heart of Paris. I welcome you on the Île de la Cité, where it all started in the Gallic period.
Then we walk together through the Middle Ages and discover the history of the splendor of the capital of France: the Notre Dame cathedral, the Philipp August wall, the beautiful 17th century mansions, the Place des Vosges.
In front of the town hall, one of the most important places of the French Revolution, we ask ourselves where the tradition of indignation among the Parisians comes from. The Le Marais district is also the “Pletzl”, meaning the center of Jewish life in this city since the 13th century. During the walk you will learn about the history of the Jewish communities in Paris and see the bloody traces that the Holocaust left in the district. You will also discover what was the true responsibility of the French government in the deportation of the Jews.
Today the Marais district is a very trendy district with many bars, restaurants and hip shops. At the end of the tour, you can linger in the Marais, have lunch and maybe try a fresh falafel in the rue des Rosiers. 3 hours also possible.
